Artist Statement

Each time I approach the canvas I create with a deep sense of love.  I open up to whatever images and emotions present themselves.  The characters I draw come from my intuitive heart and mind and reveal themselves in emotional landscapes.  I usually look at an empty canvas and the image is already in there.  Sometimes my art will reflect what a loved one is going through or illustrate my own process, revealing to me things I had not yet consciously recognized.  Often it is in communicating with others that I uncover what the art is saying about my own process.  Intuitively, we all know what we need.  In approaching each work with emptiness, I am filled with love, because we all need love.  When we do what we love we open ourselves to the nurturing that is always ready to flow to us.  I simply love creating art.  In this feeling of love I explore many different emotions and experiences.  This is a space of divine communication with my higher self, heart and mind.

My art is greatly influenced by the traveling I have done.  In Italy I was inspired by the gestures of the body rendered by the renaissance artists.  My etchings reflect this influence in their expression of line and religious iconic flavor.  In my travels to Brazil and other parts of Latin America I was deeply impacted by the color and boldness of expression that infuses all of life.  While in India I submerged myself in a learning center where the textures, colors and sacredness of life were present in all facets of the culture.  The rich colors of pink, orange, red, green and gold were breath taking!  It was wonderful to be in a climate where color was celebrated along with fabrics and pattern.  When I returned from India I created the painting "Thank You (Indian Cow)."  This painting shows the reverence I have for my teachers there, particularly my voice teacher, Ravi Sir.

I believe we all have many processes to go through in our quests for contentment and happiness.  Within my work I share my process.  This sharing is both deeply satisfying and altogether essential to my health and well being.  When there are things in life you have to do, you simply do them because you don’t know how not to.  This is the daring of our flights to our true selves- our passage home or to our true love.  In much of my work this journey is conveyed through the image and movement of the bird.

In my paintings and prints I love to explore human faces.  A friend of mine recently commented that my work gives a face to the flower essences.  I love this concept. I am currently exploring how flower essences, color, form, and charkas interact within my art. Intuitively, each piece of art I create becomes a healing process. I believe we all have unique visions and ideas that, when shared, bring healing. Visual arts inspire me to approach my life with an intuitive heart and challenge me to trust myself.  We are our own greatest teacher!
